Painting is a misleading word because it is actually much more than it sounds. It's a way of deconstructing the entire structure of what one considers to be reality and looking at it very closely. It becomes impossible to maintain the illusion that one knows anything whatsoever. What is a cloud? What is it? We are taught what things are but in painting I find the closer I look the more mysterious it becomes. From the ground clouds look almost solid, as though you could walk on one. But if you fly through a cloud, that which appeared solid from far away reveals itself to be completely spacious and without any identifying features whatsoever. It is simply a subtle shift of tones. To be in the middle of a cloud is to be inside of a deep mystery.
